Firebirds paceman Ollie Newton has announced his retirement from all formats of the game, effective after the conclusion of the Ford Trophy campaign this weekend.

Appearing in over 100 games for Wellington, Newton has made considerable contributions to the team both on and off the field since his debut in the 2015/16 summer.

The 35-year-old has taken 163 wickets for Wellington in all competitions, being a consistent force in the Firebirds’ lineup across a career that has spanned nine seasons.

“It has been an honour to be able to play for Wellington for so long”, said Newton.

“The team has accomplished a lot in my time here, but more importantly, it’s been done with a great bunch of people, which I’m immensely proud of.”

“We are so lucky in Wellington to have such a great support network and a culture that will stand the test of time. I don’t know what comes next for the Firebirds, but I can only see successes in the future”, said Newton.

Cricket Wellington’s Director of Cricket, Bruce Edgar, said that Newton has been an invaluable presence to the team as a player and as a person.

“The Firebirds have been lucky to have a person of Ollie’s calibre for such a long time now”, said Edgar.

“A true professional on the field and a great mate off the field, Cricket Wellington and the Firebirds will miss Ollie’s outstanding commitment towards both training and playing.”

Ollie Newton will travel with the Firebirds to Queenstown today ahead of the final Ford Trophy game of the season, where he will get to spend one more day out on the oval with his mates.

Cricket Wellington thanks Newton for his unwavering service to the game and the organisation, wishing him all the best for his ongoing business career.
